28 Aug 2017

So I said that I was going to try and write more but I didn’t get around to it again. So I’m just going to stop saying that I’m going to write a lot and just write what I can haha.

So we had a pretty normal week here in the mission. We had one person ready to be baptized this week but at the last second he told us he didn’t want to get baptized. This was in the area Florida. We then talked to the ward mission leader and he said that this same person had a date back in January. But the same thing happened; as he came close to being baptized he said he didn’t want to be baptized. So we let him be for awhile to see what happens. But I don’t think he will ever get baptized in this life.

So I was able to have divisions again this week with Elder Fogg. He is a new missionary but really likes to work hard. We were contacting a door and this lady kept saying come back another day and all that, well I finally had enough and said to Elder Fogg. Watch this. And then I said, lady if Jesus Christ was he knocking on your door, would you say come back another day as well?  We didn’t get into the house but the lady was left without words hahaha. After we did divisions we came back to help a family here in our area move houses. I don’t know why but it always seems like when someone moves into a new house back home it goes a lot more smoother then when someone moves house down here in Guatemala. It went well though. We were with some members and the dropped the china cabinet and glass went everywhere. It was good no one got hurt! Something that was nice after that is we had a ward activity here in Santa Marta. It was awesome because we got free food haha. We have a member that makes tacos that are super awesome. We always bug her to make us some tacos because we like them that much haha

So we have been working with a lot more members here in Santa Marta. It has been a really big help for us because we get more people involved as well we see how all the old missionaries teach. There is one member who just got back from his mission like four months ago and we are getting him to work with us a lot. He was an AP back in the mission so he is a pretty good guy. We were in a lesson with him the other night and this lady said that she wants the best for her kids and for her family. We told her that the gospel could help her. She wanted all the help but she didn’t want to do anything to get it. So after the lesson we were walking back and he said, this lady has those blessing right in front of here. She just needs to take them and run with them.

We have even gotten some help from our ward mission leader. He works all week and gets home at like 7. So it’s really hard to get in touch with him. But now in Sunday we are able to visit with him and he can come out and visit with us every now and then.

Well, we are going to have a busy week this come week. Tomorrow I have to do two interviews for some elders in my district and Then after we have an interview here for a guy. Then I have to go to the area of the sisters to do two more interviews. So you can say that I’m really happy with the district right now and I’m super happy that we have 5 baptisms this weekend. The things I’m not happy for is all that travelling haha. To add on to it we have a multi zone this week again. so that’s another day gone but, it well be a good way to end the change.

This change has gonna by super fast.  I can’t believe that it’s almost over. Time has just been flying now here in the mission. I can’t believe we are almost in September. It’s crazy to think I almost have a year in and that I will be home next September... I’ll be honest, when I started the mission I wanted to go home. Now that I have been here for a year, I want to stay here forever haha. As well I never thought I would be able to speak Spanish as well as I do. It’s kinda crazy sometimes to be like hey I’m speaking a different language. Remember before my mission and I was taking classes online for my Spanish and I couldn’t say anything and everyone was laughing? Well I can tell you I’m way better at speaking now.

Well that’s it for this week thanks for all the love and support that you send my way all the time. Thanks for all the help you have given me. Love you all!!

21 Aug 2017

Hey there everyone. Well we have had another week here in the mission that was up and down but we had some really good things this week as well for example, we had a baptism this last Saturday so it was a good way to end the week.

But lets start with a crazy story. So as a district leader I help the other elders and sisters in my district right?  Well on Tuesday night I got a phone call about to elders that ran into some trouble in there area. So this zone is really famous for crazy things happening here. So these two elders were on their way home when a guy stopped them in the street and started to threaten them. And he wasn’t that small of a guy either. They weren’t shaken up to bad which was a good thing as well nothing was stolen which is also good. I felt really bad for the one leader because he is new in the mission. But it’s good that both of them are good. The funny thing is that after I heard that I told my comp that we are going to do divisions and he was going to go and visit that area. He wasn’t to happy with me hahah. But everything after that has been really good so it couldn’t have been that bad.

With saying that we then had divisions and I had the new missionary with me. And the kid loves to just bible bash with everyone. But I see he was having problems with this one guy so I went over to give him a hand. And let me tell you the guy didn’t know anything. He told us that our church was made by a man and all that junk. then I asked who formed your church?  The man wouldn’t answer me. Then I told him that our church had to be true because Jesus taught that we would be able to know what church was his because it would have his name. So I told him that his church was pretty much false and that he didn’t need to search for the truth because we had it. Sometimes its good to bible bash. But I will always remember what Elder Stephan said, Never bible bash an older lady or kids. But anyone else is free game haha

I be honest I’m really happy to see that the new missionary here in our district is doing well with everything. He is really learning fast which is really good as well he has a pretty good trainer so that helps him a lot too. The one thing I don’t like is when the kid says; yeah man you’ll be a zone leader one day soon. I was like no man don’t wish that evil on me haha

So my comp and I get along pretty good there are really no big problems. The only thing is that he doesn’t really think the rules are important. I know that I may be a little push when people don’t follow the rules but they are there to keep us safe. So he doesn’t like to keep them and he gets mad when I call him out on something. Even when the zone leaders say something to him he gets mad. The thing that I think it is, is that he is 25 years old and he has never had someone younger be a leader over him. And I think he gets mad about it. But we only have two more weeks with this comp so it will go by really fast. The changes are going to be really weird I think. Because we really don’t have any more leaders here in the mission. We lost a bunch when Elder Stephan ended his mission as well the group after. The group was full with district leaders and zone leaders. So I’m really interested to see who becomes a new leader.

So we have this member that is helping us a lot right now. He is helping us with visiting people, with giving us references. He is a really big help for us. The thing is he is from the USA. He was born here then moved to California. The good thing is he comes and visits every now and then. And when he does he come and helps the elders with visits. As well he invites us to eat all the time. Like one night he took us to McDonalds. And just kept buying us food. Super awesome guy. Funny story about him though. The other night he came here to play soccer with the ward. Well this was Saturday night and then on Sunday he wasn’t here at church. His wife was but he wasn’t. So we went up and asked what happened and she told us that he was super sore and couldn’t get up. haha its kind of funny to be honest because the guy isn’t young he is 63 and he plays soccer like as if he was a kid haha.

So the area that I’m in right now has two wards. The reason there is two wards in our area is because the one area doesn’t have elders in it. So we have to take care of it until we get more elders. The thing is we have a choice to work there or not. And to be 110% honest we may close the area again reason why is that we don’t have anything there and it’s really hard to work with the two. But we will see what will happen this week but I have a strong feeling that we should close it.

So we have had a good week it was up and down as normally but hey it’s the mission haha I’m really happy with my district though. Because everyone should be baptizing at least one on the second of September. We are going to have one as well, the other elders will have 2 on that day and the sisters will have 1 as well. So you can say I’m a pretty happy district leader. haha

Sorry that my emails are really short now. I always wrote when we ended the day back before I had to call everyone. And every pday before we write, I write something really fast to send out hahah but ill try and do better!

Thanks for all the love and support that you all send for me here in the mission. Thanks for everything you all do for me!
Talk to you next week!

Love
Elder Nelson

14 August 17

Well it’s another week here in the mission done. We had kind of a rough week. So we work in this one area that has been closed since January. It’s been kind of dead and it’s been really hard to get things jumped started again in that area but I believe that we can help them little by little. I’m just not a big fan when I asked members to help us and they tell me if I bring this elder they will come and work with us. It really makes me mad when I see that and hear that. One kid told me that, and I said I wasn’t able to do that and he said yes you can your district leader and you can what ever you want. It kind of got to me but whatever. So the thing is the area kind of sucks. Reason why it was so hard this week is because we had a bunch of visits during the week in this area. For example we could have had an easy 25 lessons with a member this week but everything fell through. But when you have one area that falls down like that you just walk across the street to the other area and start working. We have a baptism this weekend on Saturday. The area Santa Marta has a lot of people ready to help the elders and work with them to. I’m really happy to see the people that we have that are getting ready to be baptized here. All the areas that I have had before had nothing when I went into them but now we have a lot to work with. Its really nice it keeps us busy.

So we had interviews with the president this last week. And as always we have a meeting with his wife as well. So Sister Shumway doesn’t speak Spanish so when she had an interview with two Spanish speaking missionaries I was asked to translate for her. I never would have thought that my Spanish would be good enough to translate for someone. So in my interview with president we talked about how I do with the rules here in the mission. And as we all know that I follow the rules to the point after what happened with my first comp. I told him everything and he was very happy to see what I do to be obedient. He told me as well how he likes how honest I am. I think that all missionaries need to be honest to everyone. But the person you need to be most honest with is your president. All in all it was a good interview. Funny thing though, So my hair has gotten a bit to long on top. And as I was walking out of the interview president said, Elder Nelson one more thing. Your hair... I think it’s getting a little bit too long. The thing about President Shumway is he is kind of easy going. Very spiritual and a great guy but he is able to joke around with us as well.

So everyone has probably been wondering if I have been robbed in the mission. Well it almost happened the other day. Before I go on I just want you all to know that this is a funny story. So we were in divisions and I was with a new missionary in his area. As we were walking down the road a drunk guy came up to us and said hey give me your watch. We both turned and said NO. Well this drunk said, well then give me your pen. Once again we said no. So the drunk then said, Okay I’m sorry I bugged you two please don’t get mad at me. It was one of the weirdest things that happened to me here in the mission but one of the funniest as well haha

So president and Sister Shumway changed the hours for our studies. We now have to plan for the investigator, what will we teach them, what is the invitation we will give them and what are the blessings you can receive. Now let me tell you this is one awesome way to plan. It works so much better when you teach as well it really helps you be prepared for the lesson. I have noticed that we can now teach with a lot more power and a lot more mean behind it for that person.

So the week was up and down. It always happens here in the mission. When I seen my dates Sunday night I seen that we had some really good numbers with pretty much everything. But sometimes you feel like you could have done more. But that’s the thing now we know what we can do. And what we need to do. We are always learning how we can be better and how we can help more people. That’s the life of a missionary here in Guatemala

Thanks for everything you all do for me it really means a lot to know that I have so many people back home supporting me. You are all the best. Thanks for all the love and support!

07 August 2017

So remember when I said I would write more last week?  Well I’ll be honest I didn’t write anything this week. It was one crazy week here in the district. But some good things as well happened this week. So like I said we have these two areas here in Santa Marta and Florida. And my comp before hasn’t really worked in the Florida. So I had divisions with one missionary that was in that area sometime ago. He is a member of my district and he showed me some people that he taught as well as some members. It should really help us with working in that area. We went and seen one kid named Axel who is pretty much a missionary.  He is 16 years old and when we went to talk to him he had 5 references to meet with us. But that’s not all… this kid brings his friends to activities, to church on Sunday, and even seminary! We are going to see what we can do this week with that kid to help his friends come in the church. In that area a well we have a member who is this very sweet old lady. She calls all the elders her kids. And she really does take care of them for example, She always gives us something to eat, she always asks how we are doing, she is pretty much our mom in that area.

So our other area here has a bunch of investigators. We have the most progressing right now in the district, which is really good. We are helping the people little by little with everything that they need. We are going to be baptizing here soon in the coming weeks.

Not going to lie this last week was kind of hard. We couldn’t get into any house we couldn’t teach anyone it seemed like. I’ll give you and example, we went into a house where we have an investigator and he was like yeah come in and I’ll be right there. Well 30 seconds after he comes back and says hey guys can you come back a different day?  I was not to happy. To be 100% I was lacking motivation this week. It was really hard not be like hey lets do this or let’s do that lets go visit this person. But to be honest I didn’t know what to do. It was really hard. The past couple of days I have been really praying and really asking for help to be a better missionary and a better leader. Now I’m not saying I think I’m a terrible missionary I just now that I can improve to be better. But something helped me the other day. The new missionary that is in my district told me, hey man you are a great leader and that I’m doing a good job. He told me I’m really helping him here in the mission. So funny story about this elder. I can pick what days I want to do divisions and I told this elder that he was going to leader his area with my comp to see how he does. Now remember the kid has 2 weeks here in the mission so he was really scared. But he told me that it helped him get more confidence and understand his area better. So I know it may seem mean that I did that but hey it had it’s meaning to help the elder in my district

So we went to the temple the other day as a zone. It was a good day to be honest. I was able to enjoy my time there and my mind wasn’t worried about anything. It was a nice relaxing time. But man was the temple busy after we came out. There as someone getting married, there came in a group of 30 people that entered the temple as we left. And we ran into an ex missionary there. This elder is from Guatemala and was probably the most famous here in the mission the reason why is he baptized 54 people. Crazy right?  And he is my grandpa in the mission. The reason why is he trained my trainer. So that means he’s my grandpa.

We had two days back to back where we had to get up early. One was for the temple and the other was for a multi zone conference. This multi zone was really good to be honest. Well to be honest it felt the same when the aps talked.  I don’t like how the mission is focused on numbers. They focus too much on reaching a goal and not helping others. That’s why the retention of the new members is down because people just baptize numbers. Something that was really good was the talk from Sister Shumway. She talked about how we can help the people with the doctrine of the church. Then she taught the invitation for that person. I thought that was really good. Afterwards we got to hear from President Shumway. And when a new president comes into the mission he changes something’s around right… Now I thought that we would have to wait to see some changes but fetch he changed everything right away. Well not everything but a lot of stuff. For example before we had comp study for half an hour now he changed that to be an hour. As well we have a time now to study Spanish and for the Latino missionaries to speak English. A lot of missionaries were like what the fetch. But to be 100% honest I like having an hour to have a comp study. It will help us be better prepared for our investigators.

So that was pretty much my week here in Santa Marta and Florida. We are working hard and helping people. My comp is really new. I’m his second comp that he has had in the mission. He is from Chile and he’s really old, he is 25 years old. Kind of weird being in charge of a 25 year old hahah but its good he is a good guy. But that was our week. I’m not going to say I’ll try and write more next week because it might not happen but ill do my best. Thanks for all the love and support you have for me here in Guatemala. Thanks for all the prayers as well.  Talk to you all next week!
Love you
